I'll be keeping the MM very long term, now I've got it all dialed in it is such a nice bike to ride for the roads I have on my door step, and it does long distance really well too, I enjoyed it so much on that 800 mile weekend up to Carmel and back.

I really like the R1200S but honestly it needs bigger, faster more open roads. As a riding position it works better at much higher speeds than I really want to be going, plus I already got one speeding ticket on it!!

The MM is great anywhere between walking speed and 85, while I really feel the S doesn't come into its proper operating envelope until you get above 50, and is incredible up to 150 - not that I've been that fast on it!

hey macca - what type of fuel range do you get out of the mm? as a side note, I went to a riding course and the instructor had one on loan from BMW - he had this stupid grin on his face all day - we were at a small, hilly and twisty race track, maybe that's why?

I can't beleive you're selling your black beauty and that the MM is that good! Have you got a run down on your MM mods and ride reports or such? Maybe it's a bike I have overlooked.

Good luck with the sale!

You can see everything I've done to the MM here - HP2.info • Index page

The biggest changes were to the suspension and the seat. Both are really bad stock, a GS will outhandle a stock MM despite being 100lbs heavier, and your ass won't last a 100 miles on the plank. Once you change the suspension it really handles well, and the new seat makes 400 miles a day a breeze.

Overall I'd say it is kind of like a sit up and beg R1200S, but it favors the tight twisty canyon roads that criss cross the Santa Monica Mtns where I live. The R1200S is really more of an open road bike, while I'm more of a back road and country lane lover. Honestly the R1200S would make more sense in Europe, where the speeds it is really happiest at won't put you in jail.

The MM will do just over 140 miles a tank in brisk cruise mode, and about 90 miles in track manic mode, and you have to drill out the long filler neck to get that extra 30 miles too!.

Andrew, if I had both those bikes, I would be inclined to get rid of one of them as they are close in character and performance. In your case you have put a lot of energy into the MM to get it dialed, I have done the same to my R12S which would probably make me want to keep it. You have mentioned what you consider the strengths of the MM vs the S, and I see the S as more the all arounder. I love the way my bike tools around below 50, and when it comes time to wick it up, its all good. I see the biggest advantage of the MM as the more open riding position for the long haul, but that can also be tiring, and just shift joint pain to a different area.

Your S is nice, you should sell it easily..

If it ends up staying with me I won't complain, but I doubt it'll do more than a few hundred miles a year as the MM is just an easier ride to scoot around on in the hills and canyons here.
