I've had good luck supporting the outer edge of the squirrel cage on three paint cans, with the motor hanging down in the middle, tap on the motor axle with a hammer and punch until the motor drops...

Yes, you remove the blower fan, and reach into the back to disconnect the O2 connector. You don't have to remove the wheel.

Did you try turning the steering wheel? I found it easier with the steering wheel in one specific "rotation"........ (if you've got the airbag steering wheel, the "hub" isn't round.....)
