That's exactly what I did. Removed the switches...

That's exactly what I did. Removed the switches and knobs from the console, wrapped them in a plastic bag, coiled the wires and tube and tucked them behind the floorboard and pulled the A/C fuse

I just used gloss black paint for plastic models (oil based) that I got at a hobby store, brushed on. Worked pretty well, And I used a plastic polish for the exterior side of the lens.
