Intermittant charging problem

Hi. I just acquired an 87 951 that has a small problem.
It does'nt charge consistantly. (usually not). I have seen the Voltmeter needle occasionally sit at the correct place (just below 14v) but...

Not a factory top, but looks good and functional.
Needs a few seals at top of windows.
