I thought this must be a common problem with the ball joint considering how bad mine was. In the end it was the single screw that vertically attaches the mirror arm to the base plate that was loose....

Might want a quick under car inspection to confirm it is not an issue with the subframe. The E46s also had a few of these tear out and finding it sooner rather than later would be good.
