Put your gloved hand over the end of the tailpipe and listen for the exhaust escaping out somewhere, not the most accurate, but it works.

I am sure the prep on a plane is important, but not as time intensive as making a car flat, let alone wet sanding and buffing the clear. I would think that a plane is single stage? Maybe not?
