996tt maintenance during engine drop

Hello,

I have a 996tt that has suffered a coolant pipe failure. I have dropped the motor and now in the process of fixing the leak, and taking care of the other potential leaks.

While I have the motor down I would like to perform as much preventative maintenance as possible. Does anyone know what other maintenance I should perform?

So far I am doing the following:
  • fixing all glued coolant pipes
  • replacing all rubber coolant hoses, coolant expansion tank, water pump, and thermostat
  • replacing old and cracked vacuum lines
  • replacing o-rings and seals for anything taken apart
  • servicing the fuel injectors
  • replacing the spark plugs and coils (some were cracked)

Thank you,
Jeff

That’s a pretty good list of items. I’d also have a look at the slave cylinder hose. Like brake lines, they narrow from the inside and it’s a good time to replace it. They’re tightly confined with the engine in so this is a great pm item while you’re there. Perhaps throw out bearing as well. Plastic item that wears and is inexpensive to do at this time.

You don't say how many miles you have on the engine. But, I would certainly replace the idle bearings on the belts.

Thanks guys!

tonythetarga,

The car has the GT2 clutch slave cylinder conversion, so the hose was replaced about 1.5 years ago. During this engine removal I have removed the hard lines that use to feed Pentosin from the power steering pump to the old assisted slave cylinder.

The GT2 clutch slave cylinder conversion was well worth it, as the clutch operations is now consistent and predictable, and should not fail again. I put together the whole conversion kit for about the same price as a new replacement original slave cylinder.

Thanks for the advice on the throwout bearing. I will likely replace this as well.

yelcab1,

The car has about 112K miles, so its probably time to replace those idle bearing. Thanks for this advice!

Changed mine on a partial drop and it was a real PITA.
