2002 Targa rear suspension at different heights
Hi Guys,
I have owned my 996 Targa for four years. I rebuilt it after an engine fire and it is mostly done. The resurrected engine runs great, but I have a mystery to solve in the rear suspension. I noticed that the right rear fender arch is 1/2" lower than the left, on the original, worn-out factory Bilsteins, set to standard height for US specs. I cannot afford M030 or other new suspension sets right now, so I bought used Bilsteins from a low-mileage 2001 911. I just installed them and they fit perfectly, but the "sag" on the right side is still there. I have not driven the car after the installation today, but I wonder if the low side is caused by engine mounts. The interior of the car was not scorched at all. Wheel well saw no flames either. I'm stumped. Any suggestions will help. |

Engine mounts will not affect ride height that I am aware of . Sounds like you have a broken spring or a weak spring . I believe your springs are supported on the bottom perch with a large clip that rides in a groove . Has that clip broken ? Or slipped out of the groove ?

I don't know the extent of your fire, but if it was close to that side's coil spring, it could have been hot enough to cause that spring to sag a bit. Old school low riders used to lower their cars by heating the springs with a torch. Buy a used spring and see if that resolves it. Although may be best to buy a pair of them, in case both springs got hot, but just sagged at different rates... Good luck with the repair.

A new pair of springs would be my suggestion as well. I'm the second owner of an '02 Cab and the drivers side rear sat 1/2" lower. New pair of springs solved it. First owner was an XL lady. Springs are ~$200.
