Various issues

2001 cabrio, DD, 65K on the clock. Got a check engine light. Ride was only slightly rough, but performance fell off fast.
Good local all porsche shop, diagnostic, variocam bank 1 fault code. Had solenoid replaced. Worked fine for 2 days, light back on.
Back to the shop, told I need a rebuild at 13K. With the values on 996, problems with cost vs. value of the car.
Thoughts??

What is DD?

What was the fault code? P0XXX? Did it specify the cam solenoid on bank 1?
When the CEL came back on, was it the same fault code or a different one? Do you have an OBD II scan tool?

It seems odd to me that if the first fault code indicated that the cam solenoid was bad, that replacing it worked for a couple of days, and then no more.

As far as repairing the car is concerned, I guess you have to balance the value of the car in its current condition vs. its value as a running, driving car (say around $20K or so). It might be worthwhile to check with another shop to see if they say something different.

Thanks for the reply. DD = daily driver.
Code was P1341. Camshaft adjustment bank 1. Solenoid was replaced. Still same code

Just a thought, but could the new solenoid have been bad? You said it was working for a couple days, and then the same code popped up again. I replaced the injectors on my '02 C2, and one of the ones I received had corrosion on it from sitting on shelves for years.

Personally I'd want to explore all the options before plunking down $13K for an engine rebuild. Perhaps someone on this site will have run into a similar situation.

you need to replace the entire cam actuator, pad, and chain on bank 1. That is not a full rebuild, may be $2500.
