Depends on what your budget is.
www.VitesseRacing.com would be a good place to start if you're looking for hp. Suspension upgrades may be more helpful for track use.

MAF, chipset, wastegate (my favorite mod), cat bypass pipe, maybe an exhaust will get you about 65-75 more rwhp from stock. (Comes from freeing up the intake and the added boost most chipsets are programmed for.)
Throw a turbo and piggyback fuel controller on or get a vitesse kit like mentioned and the skys the limit. Injectors are needed once a new turbo is in and If you are going to do it all at once its way easier just to kit a Vitesse kit then buying everything separately. (These kits dont come with injectors or a wastegate though) Also once you do all this stuff a wideband is kind of needed - all depends on what you want.

A track/auto-x alignment is critical. The stock suspension is pretty soft too.

Thanks Dougster - been in the family since 1985. Dad got sick of it and let it sit - so Ive been driving it since 1997. He recently got the bug again and got a 993. So it all worked out in the end

1. Clean up the car really well. Eliminate all leaks and ensure everything is tip-top from a a maintenance standpoint. 2. Suspension. Start simple with shocks and springs, and perhaps M030 sway bars. Places Like Paragon Products and Racer's Edge are great providers/advisors. And of course alignment. Follow the advice of folks with pedigree. 3. More safe bhp. For more than 10 years I have always advised people to buy Autothority, Weltmeister or Milledge chips sets. Everything else has MUCH less pedigree. Sure, some of it works... but other stuff will just blow tha engine up or cause problems-- pedigree counts. Remember Huntley Racing? 4. Join the PCA and learn about the pedigree of the people who make performance products for these cars. Once you understand the backgrounds and connections, you can pick the right pathways. Things like bigger turbos, exhausts, wastegates, test pipes, yada yada yada are all great ways to waste money if you are not careful. If you want to follow the safest, most cost-effective path, stick close to people who have raced the cars professionally.
