Smile Darton MID wet sleeve install pics...

Well it's taken some time but my block is almost done. The shop has posted my block on their website so I thought many of you would be interested in checking it out. Their install package is the best deal I've seen-

COMPLETE PACKAGE INCLUDES:

-CLEAN & INSPECT BLOCK PRIOR TO MACHINE WORK
-BLUEPRINT MACHINE BLOCK FOR DARTON MID SLEEVES
-INSTALL DARTON MID SLEEVES
-MACHINE DECK SURFACE OF BLOCK FOR MLS STYLE GASKET
-FINISH BLUEPRINT BORE & POWER HONE CYLINDER BORES TO SIZE
-FINAL CLEAN BLOCK, AND PREP FOR SHIPMENT BACK TO CUSTOMER

***$1,399.00***

I also have a set of 104mm pistons from Diamond Racing on the way to the shop, and the fitment of those is also included in the package. I'll update with new pics as they come along

It says right on the web page that return shipment is NOT included.

I seriously considered this option when I rebuilt my 951 engine, and every day I wish I had gone this route.

104mm bore would be sweet

Fixed: I read that shipping part wrong, sorry about that...I'm hoping this works out well, I'm looking to be putting down 400rwhp @ ~14lbs and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will increase the longetivity of the motor

Can you put ferrous sleeves against and aluminum block? I'm no metalurgist, but I thought that aluminum and iron (or steel) cannot be placed directly against each other.

apparently so. i have heard of ferrous sleeves being used in a 944 engine, the 'dry' sort.

I've heard the dry sorts were very bad.

Anyway, the more that I think about it, I think there are two issues with ferrous sleeves:

1) I believe there is a reaction between aluminum and iron.

2) Iron and Aluminum have disimilar expansion rates.

Maybe the specific alloy alleviates these problems?

I've looked, and couldn't find anything. Let me be clear, this appears to be a very professional job, I'm just just asking these questions to satisfy my own curiousity.

One more question:

On the picture that is 4th from the bottom, there is a spacer on the top of the block. Is that just for shipping or is that intended to stay on when the head is put on?

i am betting that is a tool they use to finish pressing the new cylinders into the block.

Are the cylinders some how bonded to the block or are they held in place by friction alone?

press fit. in theory, you could pull a scored cylinder out at the track and replace it, individually.

If anyone considers rebuilding this is definitely the way to go........ Dry sleeves are nothing but problems.........

These mid sleeves address many of the previous issues with sleeving.
