Hey, I was just kidding you man!

However,
I will take this opportunity to ask a Question about the Porsche 944 Turbo....

I've wanted one for years, is it a car that you would recommend to your best friend/a family member?

thx,

Sc

well, now that it is running properly, i love it. the first 3 months were a nightmere: vacuum leaks, faulty dme, gutted cat, faulty wiring at the the knock sensor, bad FPR and dampener, bad fuel lines at the gas tank, rusted out muffler, little interior bits that were not right. none of which was disclosed to me. the interior i knew about, because i could see it. considering where i bought the car, the should have (and i believe they did) know about all of these things, as they became obvious very quickly. however, it does have a ported head, fidanza flywheel, new bottom bearings and rings, new water pump, and new seals.

if you are going to have to take it to the shop for repairs on everything, i wouldn't recommend it, as the expense will be astronomical. if you are willing to do the labor yourself, i recommend it.

there is nothing like going 70 MPH on the freeway, punching the gas to pass someone and be going 100 MPH within seconds. getting used to the turbo lag takes some time.

i'd also recommend that you keep the car stock, if you want it to be reliable. this will probably get me flamed, but... my thinking is that once the performance of the engine starts to be altered, by chips, or whatever, the car will become increasingly difficult to troubleshoot WHEN, not IF, there are problems.

i would have to disagree with the whole keeping it stock = reliablity thing. i have a friend of mine who is stock and is having some allmost very serious problems with his car. head gastket may be leaking and that just his car. but i have had no problems with mine being modified. i find it to be a lot more fun. as far as turbo lag goes you are just in the wrong gear go down another gear. you can downsift to 3rd gear at 80 and not have any lag. or if you stay in 4th you will have a little bit of lag. though i am not to shure how bad the lag is with the stock air box and stuff since i have not had it for so long now. but i do know that mine spools up very fast and will be even faster when i upgade my turbo here in a few months. but yeah there is nothing like getting on to an open on ramp and applying the gas just to realize you are now merging on the highway at 90-100mph...... or passing cars on the lonly backroad where the passing lanes are short you get by them with lots of room to spair. or when you are really in the "sprited" mood and you see that car flying up on you and waiting till the last second to down shift to 3rd and punch it just to match and start pulling away from the car befor they even get a nose past you. yes this car is soo much fun to drive. as long as you change the oil regularly and watch the oil level you should have no problems, along with changing out all of the vacume lines with silicone hoses you will be very very happy.

actually, keeping the stock cat in place is worse for the car than removing it, because backpressure is bad for turbocharger lifespan.

What would you suggest to use instead of a stock cat: a high-flow cat or removal of the cat altogether?

remove the cat. the car should pass emissions fine and does not need the cat. it was installed by porsche on american cars because of import regulations, not in order to meet greenhouse gas regulations.

Not a flame at all, but there are people with modded 951s making over 350 and 400 RWHP reliably.

It's all about the tuning and keeping on top of the "little stuff".

perhaps we have a different opinion about the meaning of the word 'reliable'.

Maybe. . .

I consider "reliable" to mean everything installed works perfectly and I wouldn't have any reservation about hopping in and driving the car from coast-to-coast and back - with the expectation that everything would stay working. Based on that definition, I guess my '85 is reliable, my 951 isn't (has some kind of coolant leak I need to address - maybe a water pump) and my '85.5 n/a project car almost is (waiting for the new headlights to show up and needs the a/c fixed).

ok, i can agree with that. my definition adds one thing: i have no hesitation using the car as my daily driver without a back up vehicle.

extend all of the above to 10+ years without anything breaking and now you're talking reliability.

well hmm is my car reliable i have driving accross the contry coast to coast, i use it as a daily driver with no backup car, and it leaks oil and coolant (very little so not to be a major concern). but i dont have 10 plus years of owning it. so i dont know i guess.
