Did dealership sell me wrong starter?

I went to porsche dealership to get a starter for my 84/944
they gave me a starter that was much thinner than mine, I told them that it didn't look right and seller checked it on his "porsche parts program" and told me that it fits 1980-1989 944's
On the sticker on actual starter it says SR39X so when i checked on the net it says it will fit years 85.5 - 91 only. Did the dealership screw up or is it still going to work?

Pelican parts list shows the same starter for all years.

Yes it will work.
The early starter is much larger, and some argue that it develops more torque. The late starter is smaller, but it fits all N/A engines (and I think turbo's too?...).

IIRC the design of the late starter is better and it lasts longer, but I don't recall why.
