84 won't start
I just went outside to drive to work... put in the key, radio starts up, lights come on like normal, depress the clutch, turn the key, nothing but a sickening click. I'm gutted.
What might be going on?

check voltage at the starter.. when you turn the key, if you get none, it's your ignition switch...

i had one that was a couple months old, and it was dead... when returning the battery to claim it's warranty, i asked what the return rate was on these types (mine is a motomaster) and the guy said about a quarter of those sold are actually returned as defective...

That's no guarantee just because a battery is newer...may have a drain in the car that's reducing the battery power or it just could be a bad battery. Put a volt meter on it...should read around 14 volts. If you can... leave it on there and read the voltage while trying to start it....if it dips really low, then have the battery checked at your FLAPS. The clicking is the starter solenoid trying to deliver power to the starter motor but there is not enough power there so it kicks out and then clicks back in again to try and turn the starter again. It could be a weak battery, a bad battery cable or cable connection (either postive or ground), or a bad solenoid on the starter. With it trying to start, probably not a bad switch key...but still possible.

friendly local auto parts store.
just as a side note to what tom said, the dead battery may be an issue.. but when my ignition switch was cooked, I also heard a clicking under the dash when i turned the key... where's your clicking coming from?

Good point Kyle and silly me for not thinking.....there are relays under the dash that will do that. Forgot about those. I was thinking more of the starter solenoid.

Ok...so put that same voltmeter on the smaller connector of the starter and see if you have 12V while cranking there. If you do not have 12 V there, then look to the switch key.
The way it works is you should have 12V on the starter from the battery and there is a wire that runs from there to the switch key and the switch key goes back to the small terminal on the solenoid. When you hit start on the switch key, it sends 12 V back to the small post on the solenoid which sends 12 V to the starter motor and the starter turns. So if you have a full 12V at the big post on the starter but don't have 12V on the little post when you turn the key to start, the switch key is probably the problem. If you don't have a full 12V at the big post on the starter, look back toward battery cables.

I think I've isolated it to the battery at this point. I figured if it's a problem in the starter system, all the electrics should work normally, so I flipped up the headlights. They did... slowly. Now they won't go back down and the battery appears to be totally dead.
