Radiator fan Turns off with Ignition
HI,
I have a 1983 944. I have a question about the radiator fans. Do they both turn off when the ignition is turned off. Perhaps I am only familiar with Japanese and US cars but shouldn't the radiator fan stay on for a while after the car is turned off. My 944 doesn't - question is, is this the way it was made or is a relay or delay part malfunctioning? I am a new owner of my 944 and want to know EVERYTHING!!! thanks! |

One fan is for the engine cooling and one is for the A/C. It depends on the weather and the engine temp is the fans stay on or not. You might want to check the fan switch. It's screwed in the radiator on the top left side.
Be careful not to crack the radiator while putting it back.

Dutchy,
The fans always turn off when i turn the engine off. So far (since june 2006) the fan has NEVER stayed on after i turn motor off. Is it the fan switch? the fans seem to work fine otherwise. anyway, i did find the cluster rings as per a previous post. i did not like them and just sold them today on ebay for a couple of dollars more than what i paid a gentleman in england. remember? ernest |

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the cluster rings myself. They look to modern for our cars.
That's why I have a Prototipo...

one might stay on if it's been upgraded to the 6" fans.
that's what happened when i did the change on the 84944. it stays on to cool the water temp but should turn itself off. if it doesn't, it's probably the thermal switch. check www.clarks-garage.com

Dtchy is correct. One fan is for the AC, the other regulates the cooling system. The switch might be suspect here, if the fan does not cylce on/off, replace the switch. My fan stayed on and after I turned the car off and I came back to the car with a dead battery. The switch is realitivley easy to replace. Finding the right socket is another story.

Fan will only stay on if the engine temp is high. If not hot enough it will shut off with the ignition. You either have a bad switch as mentioned or just not hot enough for the fan to run post engine shut down.

The fan has NEVER stayed on after I turn off the ignition. Is it then the Temperature switch? The radiator fans turn on when the temp gauge is about 3/4 towards the RED zone. It turns off when driving at a reasonable speed. Turns off when the ignition is turned off, ALWAYS.

Everything sounds OK, except for the last sentence. Although maybe your engine has never been hot enough for the fan to stay on after shut-off.
I would replace the switch and see if that solves it.

Make sure you do not crack the radiator while putting in the new switch. The radiator is very easy to crack. I put the switch in with a crescent wrench and tightened it lightly...In the end, it just needs to seal, that's it.
You can always tighten it up later if it's leaking. Better safe than sorry.
