Might be a bad connection in one of the 3 plugs on the back of your dash. Take the gauge pod out (not too difficult, but take your time) and clean the plug connections.

Clarks Garage says you should clean the contact on the back of the gauge pod with an eraser. (like Ditchy suggested) Would also scratch a little off metal from the female side connect with file or sand paper.
If that doesn't do it, check the ground terminals under the fuse Box. Clean and apply petroleum jelly or such. I don't see how a relay would cause this. That's a mean looking Gremlin. (You funny El) Point the Grem toward an English car, cause they're more fun, electrically.
