can you guys identify this "thing"?

Passenger Side, upper outside footwell, just forward of the door, and under the dash, just above the carpet line. the camera was rotated during the pictures sorry.

it has a bracket on it, but it looks like it should be in a case of some sort..... and its not... i found it while patching the battery tray.

yes see that wire at the top in the second photo.. its soldered right into the board, its a black wire, looks factory, but if found this literaly just 'floping around' when i looked inside the foot well. cant be a good thing. hope its not important

no alarm on the car (as far as i know) no remote keyless entry...

Dosent look like anything from the factory.

If your certain your car never had any type of alarm in its lifetime, i would say it may be some kind of antenna booster. Who knows.

That really looks like an antenna wire coming off the one side, and that looks to be where the antenna amplifier sits.

Is it something to do with cruise control or Anti-lock brakes?

I've replaced my antenna booster before, and I recall that it has a metal mounting bracket like that, although it should be in a black plastic case. So, I think it may be the antenna booster but:
1) the circuit board should be in a black plastic housing
2) it should be bolted down where it goes

does your radio get decent reception?

Actually that's how circuit boards looked in the mid-80s. Note that it's mostly a bunch of resistors with a few transistors in there. Modern stuff is all integrated circuits... (chips)
