Starter Drawing too much power? 30Amps without load normal?
Just wondering. We're about to start the car (86 944 n/a rebuild) and noticed the engine wouldn't crank when the starter was engaged. We removed the starter and had it running connected to a 12v battery charger to find that it's drawing 30A, but spins quite fast. The rear of the starter is also very hot to the touch. Is this indicative of a starter that needs to be replaced?

The starter should never be run for more than 10 seconds at a time, with at least 20 seconds between runnings.
30 amps sounds on the low side, even unladen. With load a starter can draw upwards of 100 amps.

Yup, we only interrmittanly started and spun the starter. It will upon starting its spin go off the charts in its draw, but settles around 30A free spinning. Everything seems to engage just fine and the starter appears to operate correctly.
We are wondering because when attached to the car, the starter seems to not have enough juice to spin the starter ring. |

We are morons. We didn't have it hooked up to the battery. We felt stupid after seeing our mistake. BUT the good news is that it works!
