Rear spoiler - paint?

In my past life, about 35 years ago, I was an auto spray painter, and I'd like to try something.

My question.... has anyone ever successfully painted an original 944 black rubber spoiler and hatch trim body color? I think it may look good, and with modern flexi additives may work. (or it may crack and look crap!)

It would be a lot less expensive that trying to get a 968 spoiler kit.

Any ideas or pics?

you may need to dye it as it's a porous rubber... but i think it's been done..

My brother-in-law uses paint like that regularly with fantastic results. I think it would work great. Just make sure that you clean it really well first.

It's been tried before. I personally think it would look horrible.
You might also run into problems after closing the hatch 10+ times while grabbing it on the spoiler.

Correction: Make sure you put tons of flex agent into it.

What kind of prices were you running into on the 968 wing out of curiousity?

A fibreglass 968 kit from the UK comes at about US$550 posted to Oz.
(AUS$700). Thats a lot of beer money!

I do personally think a painted 944 spoiler would crack too easily too. Just wondered if anyone had any succes with some "miracle" treatment.

Wow. That is a lot of beer money. How about giving www.partsheaven.com a try - I've had nothing but great luck with them and you can even haggle on the initial asking price. Might be worth a long distance phone call from down under.

They should make paints for the material by now. My RC car bodies are made of thin sheets polycarbonite - they are very very flexible, and the paint is built to flex with it. The issue - will be your hands on the spoiler if you have to pull up hard to release.

RC Paints like Pactra could work but the sheer volume you need for the spoiler would probably nealry equal the amount it would cost to glass over the spoiler and make it a solid unit with regular paint.
Yeah I know how painting Lexan is (fellow rc racer) and while the finish looks great it is usually because it is painted from the inside.
