Speaker replacements?
2003 996 Cab, I believe the Boxster speaker system is similar if this wides the people who can assist in this venture.
I am attempting to upgrade the sound system and replace the OEM speakers(dash, doors, and back seat) with something that fits in the factory spots. It appears that Porsche is attempting to snuff the after market segment with their proprietary speaker and mounting bracket. I do not want to modify the vehicle to make a speaker fit at this time. I'm not worried about head units, amps and subs at this point. I just wish to replace/upgrade the speakers. If you have upgraded your speakers, what have you used? As a side note the dash/back seat speakers are a two-way speakers. The speaker is a 4.5 inch paper midrange with a 1 inch tweeter mounted side by side in Porsche's propriety teardrop bracket. The door speaker size is unknown by me at this time. Thanks in advance for your help.

It can be done , and it is NOT as difficult one might think.
There are several good 2 way kits , that will fit in those locations , with some mods. But the mods are not visible , as they will be behind the speakergrilles. As far as I know , there is no replacements available that will fit without any mods at all. I know several guys in UK have done the thing , by fitting MB quart 2 way kits inside the 996 speakergrilles. I bought a POLK kit ( ex 2540 ) that did fit nicely , with some ( not much ) glueing involved. The biggest thing is the wiring & fitting & hiding the crossovers. The door units should be replaced too , while doing that sort of improvements. But I simply wasnt brave enough to start opening the door panels , so I left the stock woofers there. There is a "specialist" , I think he is somewhere in CA , that can do miracles with Porsches , without ruining the looks. I just can't recall now who he was.... he helped me too. With some good advice , and I did not buy anything from him ! That is good service ! Be warned though , that when you start improving , there is no end.... EDIT : check this , www.caraudioinnovations.com They are really helpful ,and do know what they are doing !! Last edited by eki912; 07-15-2007 at 11:56 PM.. |

Thanks for the reply.
Update on this project, I replaced the dash speakers and backseat speakers with some modifications. I did have a stereo facility do the work. (If there was a problem with the install they warrant the product and work after modifications. Mama didn't raise no dummy.) The dash and backseat speakers were replaced with 2 way speakers, Alpine SPS-10C2 units (30 watts RMS with 150 peak max power). I was advised 2 tabs per speaker were modified, ground off, for the install. I did leave the door 5.25" sub-woofers installed. Not a bad speaker but there were issues by the turner getting everything to work properly when using the factory head unit and amp. Sound quality...much improved. Don't expect heavy metal pounding and hair flailing everywhere but the sound is cleaner and crisp. Even my wife noticed a difference. If you want to go hog wild...replace the head unit, install an amp and sub-woofer system. Having a cab...I just wanted to clean up the sound without drawing attention to the vehicle. I hope this info helps.
