NEW - 996 On Ebay
Has anyone seen this on Ebay? A 480 mile 99!!! What are some things to be concerned about when looking at a new 8-9 year old car?

I would have replied but don't know what to suggest you look for particularly in this situation. I would say that you check the underside for oil leaks. The rear main seal does seem to have been a problem early during production and with low miles it's likely that this has never been updated. On the other hand it won't really have had much of a chance to develop a leak so you may not see anything anyway. If the car really has been used so infrequently I guess I would make sure none of the seals have dried out. Make sure the tires haven't developed flat spots too if it's been sitting without moving.
I suppose it all depends on what you want to do with the car if you get it. If it is going to be a garage queen then I wouldn't worry too much, but if you're intentionis to drive it regularly then you need to be more fussy. On the other hand, if you are going to use it why pay a premium for the low milage? My personal opinion would be to look for a higher milage but newer car, but that's just me.

Ditto. A car that's been sitting around unused for eight years is going to have some issues that would need tending to. For example, the fuel system could possibly be in really bad shape if the fuel was just allowed to sit in there - and I mean the whole system, all the way up to the injectors. The seals in the car might be dried out unless it's been driven periodically. Also, there were some systems that were modded or replaced under warranty that probably have not been done on this car. The tires are most likely in need of replacement. If you're planning to buy a driver, I would look for one that's been used but treated like a family member. They are out there - mine is an example.
It is a nice car, however. Last edited by 450knotOffice; 09-25-2007 at 08:13 AM.. |

Unless you're a serious collector, I can't see why you'd want to pay that kind of money for a low mileage 99. You have to have some money to spend to buy a car like that and keep it parked. I think that leaves most of the guys out of the picture....we buy them to drive and this car's value would be shot down if it was driven.
You can buy one hell of a 99 with around 15K miles on it for around $33-36K....so it boils down to whether you buy it to cover up and hope the value goes up, or buy it to drive...in which case you'd shoot yourself in the foot insofar as immediate depreciation goes.

I have to agree with all of the above. A 99 is not even a collectable, it was the first year of the 996 and they had big engine troubles. That is why they don't hold the value, like for say a nice 993 does.
I would be all kinda afraid of that car, sitting for 9 years with 480 miles? That guys is an idiot, read his e-bay listing sounds like a jerk too! Don't buy it if you intend to drive it offten, otherwise you will be pouring money into it. Aloha. |
