Ignition switch problems
2003 C2 Cab
In the last couple of days my key has been sticking in the ignition switch. Today, the key was stuck. I was able to get the key out (in its normal position) but now the computer system still thinks the key is in the ignition switch. 1. I am still able to start the vehicle and remove the key when stopped 2. The switch sticks when starting/stopping the vehicle Naturally I did get the vehicle home. I have removed the key and for safety reasons disconnected the battery. Any ideas? If the switch is bad, do I replace the entire assy? If the switch assy is replaced, do I need to have new keys made. If new keys are required, can I reprogram the key heads myself, or am I going to get date raped by the stealership? Price for parts, labor time? TIA. Mookster

You need the complete ignition switch assembly, the original keys remain in use.
Any independant Porsche repair shop can do it, if you don't want to visit the dealer. Call your local shop for a price. Make sure you ALWAYS have one spare key (which works), and know where it is.

To conclude this thread I am reporting the outcome:
The car is back from the mechanic. The electrical portion of the ignition switch failed. Part # 4A0905848B, $35.95 as listed on PP. The keys/reprogramming was a non-issue Labor to remove and replace the ignition part, 1 hour. I had the plugs changed as well just because I personally did not have the time...2.2 hours. THAT ONE HURT! Just as an FYI, the plugs were shot at 45,000 miles. Drive safe.

Replacing the electrical part of the switch rarely fixes the problem long term, although the '03 may have the update part. Usually it's the lock assembly not the switch that fails.
Porsche updated the complete lock assembly and don't sell the electrical switch seperately.....

I had to replace the entire assembly on both my '06 Boxster S and my '07 GT3.

2001 911 Same Ignition Problem
Your timing couldn't be better. I have the same problem and it is going in the shop Wed to get it fixed. My friend with also a 2001 had the same issue and the steering lock unit needed replacement. Part # 1996-347-017-07, $137. Total cost at Concours in Milwaukee with labor was $493. I am choosing an independent so hopefully it will be less. Let you know on Friday.
