loose anti-roll bar?
I have a "clunking" sound from the front end of my '99 996 with 52K miles on braking. This nly occurs after I have backed the car and braked. When I go forward and brake I hear the clunk. It only happens the first time I brake then dissapears.
I think it is a loose anti-roll bar. When I put the car on my home lift the bar has a bit of play (enough to make a slight rattling sound but not that loose). Is this normal. The bolts are tight but the bushing connecting the anti-roll bar to the slender vertical control arm seems worn. Any thoughts? Is this a problem or a minor annoyance?

It could also be the brake pads shifting back and forth when you brake in reverse and then forward. My turbo brakes used to do that with Axxis pads.

you shouldn't have any play in the sway bar links. double check the lower nuts and make sure those are tight

If your sway bar was loose it would make noise when driving over bumps etc.

It is not a problem. I drove my early 911 fitted with turbo brakes for 17 years with this happening. Sometimes it would change/go away depending which brake pads I was using. You are better of with them a little loose rather then tight. If they were tight it could cause brake drag and over heating, rotor warping/cracking, grease boiling out of the bearings etc.. Double check the caliper mounting bolts to make sure they are tight.
