bypassing the mufler for hp increase
I was wondering if you was to replace the stock muffler with an empty muffler, or gutting the preexisting muffler altogether, would this increase exhaust flow hence more horsepower. I know this is not a mustang but i had a lot of friends who own American muscle cars and they would dump the exhaust or use a x-pipe for better flow. You can also put an empty muffler in the place of the stock one to quite it down. any suggestions on this matter? It sounds like a really cheap way to add horsepower. I don't think it would throw a check engine light because this is all done after the o2 sensors. what do you guys think?
by the way I have a 99 996 non turbo with 110,000 miles. Oh ya any other suggestions for cheap horsepower? Thanks ------don------ |

You can get bypass pipes... O2 is before the muffler so no CEL... its very loud... HP increase, I highly doubt it.

The bhp gain will be minimal. You might even get less horsepower.

why would it decrease hp?

you need back pressure just as much as you need high flow...

If you actually dyno test mufflers most of the aftermarket exhaust systems lower the bhp to the rear wheels. At best you'll only drop 2 or 3 bhp. I've seen some drop 15 bhp from the stock system.
The modern exhaust system is really well engineered. The factory does know something about engineering. Richard |

No, you will actually gain HP and TQ. A 996 with no cats and no mufflers ie a pipe straight from the headers to the exhaust tips makes nearly 17-20 hp on the dyno. TQ is higher across the band as well. Some ECU tuning is needed to make the most of that.
The trick to your respective butt dynos is that you add a little gas and hear a whole lot of noise but don't feel the acceleration you are used to go with the noise. A car with no cats or mufflers is very very loud. You wouldn't want this for the street. In fact I couldn't stand waking up the whole neighborhood once a week to sneek out to the race track on a sat morning. As of right now I am running with Cat bypasses but with mufflers for a very nice compromise. Car still makes 299RWHP on the dyno. |

I was at our local dealer yesterday and they had a customer's car in for service that had the muffler bypasses installed. The service team at the dealership thought the car sounded terrible. I thought the car sounded terrible. It was too loud and the tech that drove it said it caused a very loud droning resonance at speed. Don't do it.
I have the PSE on my 997 C2S (with the speed sensor vacuum actuation disconnected) and it sounds great! |
