04 gt3 over-revs on PPI

Hi All,

I need advice on an 04 gt3 ppi. I had a ppi done on a car in Texas and it came up on the scanner with one level 1 and two level 2 over-revs, I ended up not buying the car (more of a mileage issue). Now I have had another ppi done (great non-tracked car) and the shop said it had 78 level 1 ignition pulses and 378 level 2 ignition pulses.

What the heck is an ignition pulse in relation to an over-rev? Pardon my ignorance, I feel I should know this but the Porsche dealership could not give me an idea of what it meant. Hopefully someone on on here give me an answer?

Thank you.

The number of ignition pulses tells you how long the engine was overrevved. The level (1, 2, etc.) is the RPM range that was reached. Higher is worse. Level 4 and higher is supposed to be really bad news, and level 1 and 2 aren't so bad. But I'd check with an expert to be sure. I'm pretty disturbed that the dealership didn't know this.

The over-rev ranges change from year to year and model to model. This is not in the service manual. You won't find anyone in Porsche handing out the info on exact RPM numbers.

That being said:

I have one customer with a 997 GT3 that pulled 2nd instead of 4th. He hit Range 5, and obliterated his aftermarket flywheel and bell housing. We pulled the trans, installed a new flywheel and clutch- welded up the bell housing- and compression tested the engine. All ok. He now has about 10,000 more miles on it than when it happened. Most of that is track miles.

You wont find a stick shift Porsche with 0 range 1 revs. You hit range 1 anytime you hit the rev limiter. Everyone does it. Range 2 isn't scary either.

Range 4 or above, and I would be worried. But even so- like I said, I have seen a range 5 live to tell the tale!
