2004 996 detailing questions
My wife and I recently purchased a Speed Yellow 2004 996 Coupe. The car has a black (partial?) leather interior with yellow interior accents consisting of center tunnel, seat backs and seat belts.
I was cleaning and detailing the car today and I was wondering what exactly IS leather on the interior and what is vinyl. I want to make sure I'm using the right product on the right surfaces. I typically use Vinylex spray vinyl dressing and Meguiars Gold Class Leather spray cleaner / conditioner. Any ideas on how to clean the yellow seat belts? I'm also curious about the center tunnel and seat backs. Are they painted plastic or is the color molded in? Pics below. ![]()

If the part of the dashboard above the gauges has stitching then the car has full leather. Everything that is stitched is leather. (and more)
All the yellow parts are painted and scratch easily. Rich

Love your car, as for the seat belts I use a microfiber towel dampened with hot water to wipe clean. Also good to dust & clean all sufaces in interior.

I wouldn't mess with the belts except to trim off the fuzz with scissors but be careful not to cut into them, I'm sure you're capable. There is a lot of leather on my 2001 turbo. Doors are leather, not the speaker covers, the dash is leather, the rear seats there is a lot of leather. What is not leather is. The better question. The seat memory button console, the passenger side rocker dish, I can't remember the rest right now. You can scratch the back of the seats. So be careful. Have fun!

I looks like the dash pod is vinyl, no stitches. I think I've sorted out most of the interior with the exception of the following:
air bag covers in doors horn pad w/ metal crest area on steering wheel behind horn pad headrest area on seats w/ embossed crest (sport seats w/ painted hard backs) glove box door door handles and adjacent storage bin covers I made the mistake of using Vinylex on the radio knobs. Now they're very sticky. Found replacements, but $15 to $25...each... for knobs (that shouldn't have deteriorated in the first place)?

Good looking GT3 answer for seat belts
I purchased a 2001 996 c2 and the seat belts were definitely in need of cleaning as well. I posted the question on PCA's web site and received this answer.
"The fabric is synthetic and is prone to staining. Products such as Afta will remove grease from fabrics with no danger of harming the belt. Afta is available at hardware stores. John Paterek - PCA WebSite - 9/11/2005" BTW my 996 is Speed Yellow and seat belts are as well ![]() ![]()
