well...something to do with verifying the chasis and engine...but what does chasis and engine got to do with it........can anyone elaborate on that? Angry because it was such a fateful event.....angry with myself, basically.

By the way, does anyone knows if we could complain anything to Porsche Germany if we are not happy with their authorised dealer? Is there a way? Has anybody done it before?

What is a DME ?

Could a faulty DME cause the accelerator to be malfunction? and if a DME is faulty, what causes it? Any expert here, please explain, Thanks!

Still not clear on what you're asking. Are you trying to find out what to look for when buying a used engine or trying to fix an engine problem?

Hi Dave, the engine can be started but won't accelerate and the workshop said its a faulty DME...shouldn't it be a throttle problem instead of a DME....I am concerned if the mechanic understands what he does!

Hope my explanation helps

2002 996 has an electronic throttle.
Either the PST2 or PiWis tester will show the faults, enable the technician to activate sensors, actuators and read what is happening. Otherwise it would be a guess.

Just wondering why you are concerned and thinking of complaining to Porsche AG that the Porsche dealer has diagnosed the fault.

Britwench, thanks so much for your reply Well, if the diagnostic took them blaaady 2 months....what sort of service a porsche dealer is rendering...you can connect the dot! But i guess, what Porsche AG would be interested on how many Porsches the dealer could sell.....who cares about the after sale service...true?! *sigh*

Wish i am residing in the US.....then i could rest assured my porsche will always be in a tip-top condition and if things do screw up, i know help is always there...yikes....i'd better dream on and on and on :P

Anyway, would you happen to know how to cross-check a Porsches' engine if it is genuinely in its place? ....pop the hood, engine encryption is there, right? and those numbering would also be imprinted on the engine itself right? but how to get to those numbering to the engine....do we have to dismantle everything , i mean, the filter part and those wiring just to see it??...or one could just jack up the car and Voila!~ so, which is which guys?

Much appreciated if you know the answer to my question.

Many thanks in advance...cheers! Guten Tag!

A DME scan will give the engine number so you can make sure the DME matches the number stamped on the engine.

If you are not the original owner, the engine may been replaced before.
Why does this matter? Even if you have the engine number, what will it tell you?
You already have the VIN, what did it tell you? Well the engine number will tell you the same thing...nothing that is relevant.

If you don't like or have no confidence in the dealer, find another one.

It sounds like the evalutaion report is testing the vehicle on a Piwis tester and printing the report.
What was the reason for having the test done?

Britwrench,

the whole drama is to make sure....EVERYTHING is MINE....yeap, that baby belongs to me ...bought it brand new.

so i gather you're saying the engine number and the VIN should match perfectly! Thanks heaps!

Find another one? well, is it true that if you were to buy a part to replace (not via the dealer), one'll have to refer to the dealer for the part numbers...isn't it foreverly stuck with the dealer somehow? or i m duped to believe I NEED THE DEALER forever after?

Hey David, remember earlier on you said that,

"A DME scan will give the engine number so you can make sure the DME matches the number stamped on the engine."

ok, I am curious on one thing though...say..in this scenario....if the engine had been replaced...just the engine....and the DME remains untouched...so when one gets a DME scan...yes, it would still show the engine number, but is it possible that even though the engine had been replaced already, the DME won't detect that bit?

Also, i understand that a DME can be repaired, but is it safe to use a repaired DME?
will it compromise the overall performance of the car? or it is best to replace with a new DME instead.

Thanks !

The engine number and VIN number are different so they don't match. If you bought the car new why do you think the engine isn't original?

A new DME is better than a repaired one but since it's out of warranty I would expect it's up to you to decide if you want to spring for new or rebuilt.

*lol*......just to be sure....that's all Thanks David for your feedback..much appreciated

By the way, what would be the causes that can damage the DME? Any DME gurus here....is Electro static discharge be one of them?

anyone knows where the DME relay is located for a 996 targa? What does a DME relay function as?

A repaired DME, is it recommended at all? would it screw up any other components in the long run....and exactly what is the shelf life of a DME?

If the car was tested at a Porsche dealer, any fault codes (and the relevant numbers) can be sent directly to Porsche AG for confirmation.

If it does need a DME, the new ones are not that expensive (related to the price of the vehicle) and will need programming. I only install new DME units on the rare instance of actually requiring replacing.

Dave is correct the engine and VIN do not match. PET will show if the engine numbers are within certain range for a specific VIN.
Porsche dealers can tell you the original engine number.
