Oil Capacity 9.7 quarts??
I did my first oil and filter change on my 1999 996 C2. An easy job thanks to the posts on this form.
I let it drain overnight and refilled the next day. With filter the book says 8.7 quarts but to get it to the max on the dip stick and dash oil level segmented display took close to 9.7 quarts. The 8.7quarts seemed to be the min needed. I also fully drained all the containers as well. Feedback appreciated Gary Last edited by GaryOehrle; 04-28-2011 at 03:01 PM.. Reason: typo |

I buy 10 quarts for a oil/filter change. When I change my oil after a 15 minute drip, I use 9.5 quarts to get the max fill point. I don't ever remember seeing 8.7 quarts anywhere.

The 8.7 quarts is listed in the original owners manual that came with my Carrera when an oil change is done with a filter change at the same time.

The Factory info states 8.75 if I remember correctly. However, I've learned that these engines do require 9.5+ quarts to fill. Why Porsche would want you to under fill your engine is beyond me...
![]() Although I did have a customer who tried running his car with over 4 gallons of oil in it! The dipstick had broken and he just kept adding oil every couple weeks although the dash gauge read full. I had no idea that he was doing this until I went to drain the oil and it just kept coming out, and coming out, and coming out! I thought it would never stop!!

Thanks for the feedback on the 9.5+. I will sleep better.
As for the guy's 4 gallons it just goes to show you . . . .! Gary O |

I've heard that overfilling your crankcase can cause oil to the upper end of the engine causing it to smoke (exhaust). They say once this happens it will continue to smoke indefinitely. My dealership recommends running your engine with the oil level below the 1/2 mark on the dipstick. Anyone else heard something similiar?

Wish we had dry sump motors. I find that if I run at the top bar I use ~1/2 qt in 1k miles and then none of my remaining 9qts for next 4k. YMMV
