What's the trick to unlocking the doors from the key?
I just bought a 1999 996. The door unlocking from my key is inconsistent, and I can't figure out if there's some sequence I don't understand, or if something is wrong with it.
Clicking the button on the key will lock the doors fairly consistently. But they don't unlock very consistently. It seems that sometimes unlock when I click it once, and someone it takes a double-click. Sometimes it seems I have to click it and hold it for a second. I replaced the battery, and the range seems fine. |

I once had a similar problem with a Jaguar. Changing the battery didn't help my situation either. So I took key and Jag to the dealer. The dealer thoroughly cleaned the electrical contacts inside the key, and all was well.

So, I figured something out -- the receiver for the key transmitter is the little half-dome thing in the middle of the dashboard, just behind the windshield. If I point the key right at that, it works great.
But should I have to do this? If I'm walking up from behind the car, this is a problem. Other cars I've had worked with much more universal range and field. |

There is a TSB, number 9662 "Insufficient Range of Remote" on extending the remote operating range. It involves rerouting the antenna. it is on Renntech.org.
You have to be a member to see it. That site is worth joining for the tech help and access to TSBs, manuals etc. http://www.renntech.org/forums/tsbs/carrera/
