Question Slow Starting C4

My 2004 C4 start slow, many seconds > 10, before starter engages. Usually does this on a cold start, after sitting over night, but not always. Engine display, says waiting for oil level check sometimes. Does it just need a quart? I check the level on the dip stick an its full. Occasionally I get a an intermittent oil sensor error. Could they be related? Any thoughts?

Wow, more than 10 seconds before the starter engages? That is strange, what happens while you are holding the key in the start position before it engages? Maybe start with a battery?

The dashboard lights and usually shows the message "Checking Oil Level" and then the counts down from 4 secs, 3-2-1 and sometime starts and then sometimes not.

I replaced the battery (close to $500, Ouch!!) at the dealer, last month thinking this was the issue, but it hasn't helped.

Could it be oil pressure sensor, or a netral safety switch fro the clutch/shifter?

I have the same problem from time to time where i go to start the car and it just doesn't want to turn over and then after 8-10 seconds it finally does. It happens haphazardly and just yesterday for the first time, after it started, when i went to give it a little gas, it stalled out.

It's an '02 C4 Cab that is in a heated garaged so its not an outside temperature issue. Any thoughts? Battery seems to hold a charge a little south of 14 on the dashboard guage so i don't think its the battery

I just spoke to a co-workwer, with lots of experience with BMWs. He thinks it could be clutch pedal switch or maybe parking break switch. I'm going to poke around this weekend and see what I can find. Last time I had this problem I was frustrated and cycled the emergency break and excatly at that time the starter engaged, not sure if its related, but I'm going to investigate further.

Could be a clutch switch, they go out fairly often. I don't think the parking brake switch would have any effect on starting the car; the clutch switch would.

Souinds like the electrical part of the ign switch is going bad, very common problem. Odd things start to happen, no climate control-OOPS it works again, can't turn car off or on, everything lights up car does not turn over etc...

$12 NAPA 4A0905849B- Change out time ~45 minutes the first time, 15 after that. Porsche does not offer this part anymore. Audi, VW, NAPA, PEP Boys etc... do.
