IMS Bearing Preventive Maintenance per LN Engineering

As an alternative to retrofitting the IMS bearing, has anybody removed the outside IMS bearing seal? If so, please share your experience as I am contemplating doing this over the winter. Cheers.....

P.S. I posted the same question on RennTech with no success so maybe I'll have better luck here.

Actually, you did get an answer. In order to remove the seal, you are more than 90% of the way to replacing it (everything is apart, the engine is locked at TDC, the cams are locked), so why not just do the upgrade?

Check over in the Boxster / Cayman forum. There have been discussions about the bearing and that, after all the bearings that have been removed and inspected, no grease has ever been found inside the bearing...just motor oil. The bearing wear varies but with no grease it is just a matter of time. The bearing is supposed to be sealed. If you remove the seal to inspect, aren't you damaging the seal? I just replaced my IMS bearing after almost 68k. The seal looked great...but after I removed it oil started to slowly leak out. I removed the seal, damaging it in the process by the way, and all that was inside was oil. The bearing rolled without noise and the balls were nice and shiny with no pitting or damage but it was just a matter of time before it wore down enough to cause a problem. I agree with JFP, you are 90% there. For the definitive answer, just replace the bearing and inspect the old one. You will confirm you did the right thing when you find no grease in the bearing.

JFP, I think that you have misunderstood my original question posted in Renntech which was whether anybody had removed the outside IMS bearing seal with success (on any 997 or 996 for that matter). There was some good discussion on preventive maintenance and the suggestion that I might as well do the whole LN retrofit while in there.
In my case, I have an '06 997 2CS which has the latest and largest IMS bearing which unfortunately cannot be replaced without splitting the long block. So LN's recommendation is to repack the bearing or preferably just remove the outside IMS bearing seal so that motor oil can get in there. When I did not get an answer to my original question I reposted here and in the Rennteck 996 section.
By the way, I note that as of this morning (Oct 4th), there is only one Tenntech posting in the 996 section where a member has removed the outer seal with success.
So folks, do post if you have removed the outer IMS bearing seal and share how many miles you have gone since its removal. Cheers....

I think you are going to find that very few have undertaken the removal of the rear seal......

I think the idea behind the sealed bearing was to keep the oil out, but as we all know, the seals fail over time and oil gets in anyway. I don't think the bearing design works well enough to just be lubed with oil. Opening it up to get some oil in it might be a quicker path to destruction than leaving it alone.

Today we completed an IMSR on an engine with 16K miles total since 2004. The IMS tube was filled with oil and thats an indication of inner and outer seal failure which is the definition of a stage 1 bearing failure.

Tomorrow I'll cut the bearing open and start the evaluation process.

Jake, we are honored with your presence. Sure would like to hear your conclusion on the 2004 and on your opinion on removing the seal particularly on an '06 997 C2S which, as you know, has the non replaceable large bearing (at least not without splitting the long block).

Jake, there is a possibility that the oil in the IMS tube entered from the other end. Can you let us know the overall condition of the IMS bearing; the seals, grease or oil, condition of the ball bearings, the condition of the race........
Which Porsche model was the bearing from?

No, it is not possible. The IMS tube is sealed. Any oil that enters it does so through the IMS bearing seals.
