2002 996

What are the board's thoughts on a 2002 996? Looking at one in LA that is selling for 24k with 92k miles. Can't tell if that's a good price. Are there known issues with this year? I know there are engine failures in the 99, right? Will be a daily driver for me.

May be a little high with 92 k on it. Of course I really don't know what condition the vehicle your looking at is in. If you go by some of the auto sites like cars .com the 2002 s are priced much higher with lower mileage. Always try to get maintenance records with the vehicle you are going to purchase. Always would like to see if it had a IMS replaced. And if you are not capable of inspecting the vehicle then get someone that is. Kelly blue book has a 2002 911 coup with that miles on it at around 21,000. I am driving a 99 Carrera 911 with 70,000. So far it is ok.

Chain tensioners, water pumps with that mileage.

$24K is too much. Avoid dealers.

Dealer warranty? All 996 99-2008 have a ball bearing IMS bearing on one end. 99/2000 = dual row that can be replaced, 2001/04 single row that can be replaced with the engine in the car, 2005/08 larger single row needs case split to replace.
3.4 engines seem to have more problems with intermix/cracked heads. Fixable pain in butt. If you really like the car budget for IMS & water pump replacement,(~$3k) plus anything else a PPI turns up.
There are many 996 with over 100k miles on them in Rennlist forums.

My opinion ~20k would be better price unless dealer gives 1yr warranty.

Car dropped from 24750 to 23990. It's a private seller. Just had 90k service done, new tires and new brakes. Obviously will need to get IMS done. Should I try to get him to come down to 21.5 or 22?

With 90 K on it i would try to get the price lowered a little.. Do you have to have this car? Maybe you should look at a few more. That seems to be dealer price for that mileage. New brakes and tires are a plus $ and that is the first thing a dealer would do to sell a vehicle so make sure you have someone check out the rest of the vehicle you want. No car is perfect.

There are plenty of 996s out there to choose from. However, if the car has everything you're looking for, color, interior, etc and checks out otherwise, I wouldn't let $1000 stop you.

It shouldn't be difficult to find a clean 2002-2004 with less than 65K for $25K=$27K. Pushing 100,000 miles likely means potentially expensive service work on any car, 996 included.

I'm in the process of installing a LS3 motor in a mint 2003 C4S 64K babied IMS FAILED car. So far I've found.
1. Frt Strut spring bearings dried out (Easy take apart and repack after strut dissassemble)
2. Frt strut upper mount assembly rubber cracked and seperated from bushing. $250 a piece. I fixed mine with a 2 part aircraft fuel cell sealant.
3. Strut boots cracked and worn, replaced with a offroad Red shock boot.
4. Transmission to drive shaft Guilbo joint cracked and worn, replaced $70 on E-Bay.
5. C4S Frt axle shafts outer CV boots torn. Hard to find, I bought red universal off E-bay, 4 for $50
6. Transmission mount cracked and worn, resealed with Acft sealant.
7. Flex Brake lines old and cracked. Replaced
8. Frt Hood struts worn out, Ouch on the haed TWICE!
9. Frt lt wheel bearing worn out real bad.
10. Rt rear wheel bearing worn.
11. Radiators pluged with debree
Couple things to think about. Nothing to major except maybe the wheel bearings. Not bad for a car that was never abused.
