CB will be difficult. I know of no decent radios with remote head, and finding room inside the passenger compartment for a radio is very difficult, especially fi you have a passenger. Cobra and a few others make the radios with a massive mic with controls on it, and a small box you hide somewhere....that might work. The antenna will be tough, unless you can stand a simple mag mount. There are fender-lip mounts that will work on the hood or trunk lid....but....as my wife put it, "fugly".
I have a Kenwood D700 2M/70CM ham radio in mine. Its a remote head design, so the guts of the radio are mounted under the hood and theres only a small display/control unit inside the cab (about the size of a cellphone). And I have a 996 with a GT3 console delete, so theres room under the dash for the head unit. I have a MFJ through-the-glass antenna. It doesnt perform very well, but it does work. Mine's a ragtop, though. Speeds over about 65mph with the top down produce a pretty irritating whistle from the antenna loading coil cutting through the air, so I usually just reach up and unscrew the antenna for highway speeds with the top down. CB is pretty useless. It regularly produces conditions where you cant talk to someone 1 mile away but that lady with the fingernails-on-the-chalkboard voice from Guatemala is blasting in. I am forced to use CB for my 4X4 club activities, but it is really pretty much of a junk band after you've experienced ham radio. |

I have wondered if there are wireless mikes for CB's using blue tooth. I have a CB in my Jeep Commander and use it on occasion for direction info to get around a accident. I bypassed the mic and I just use it to listen.
I don't have a CB in the 996 but have a Sirius Radio. I mounted the antenna which is very small under the plastic cover near the wiper blade mechanism. It blocks some signal but it is not exposed. I am not sure if a loaded CB antenna would fit in the same location. Do you still have to pass a code test to legally use ham gear? Last edited by barlowdo; 03-22-2013 at 10:55 PM.. |
