Engine compartment noise 99-996
I went to look at a low mileage 996 the other day and when I started the car I heard what sounded like a loud fuel pump hum from the left side of the the car. I popped the engine lid and looked inside but couldn't locate it. When I turned the car off, it slowly "spooled" down. Starting it up - it spooled back up. It almost sounded like an electric fan of some sort. Other cars I looked at didn't have this noise.
Any ideas? Thanks

Secondary Air Injection (SAI) pump, comes on for ~15-30 seconds at cold start to help light the cats.
Lives by your left knee when standing gazing into the engine compartment. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner. When they get very loud they need R&R to clean the carbon out of the pump and possibly grease the bearings. About $250 to replace with Bosch and $1200 with the same Bosch pump in a Porsche labeled box.
