This isn't the engine you were looking for...
So, interesting discovery on my new-to-me 2004 C4S today: Turns out I don't seem to have the original engine in the car.
My mechanic was replacing my water pump for me as a preventative measure today, and it turns out the pump that was in there is the original, and a 997 part. My best guess is the original engine was replaced under warranty for the first owner with a later model M96 that used some of the 997 parts during transition. Can someone shed a little more light on these engines? What years were the M96 engines using these hybrid 997 parts? I know the engine code would help a lot but I actually got rid of a lot of tools a couple years ago and don't have the means right now to get under the car and look. I'd love to know to understand part compatibility better for future part orders, etc. Also, was the power/torque any different? Anything else of importance to understand? Any information would be helpful. Cheers!

OK, just following up on my original post. Looks like the engine is the original and not a replacement (as far as I can tell) given that it has a M96/03664xxxxx engine code, and the 997 water pump can actually be used on it according to Loren over on a Renntech post (http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/41751-m96-and-m97-confusion/page-2). Either the factory installed a 997 pump on the engine originally or it was replaced with one at some point (I'll ask my mechanic tomorrow if he had to snip the gasket).
In short, feel free to ignore my original question .

I had an extremely late production 2005 C4S. It had 997 parts absolutely everywhere. Was really interesting to see. Mechanically there's nothing revolutionary between a 996.2 and a 997.1.

Interesting, thanks for the reply dtw.
For anyone curious, I talked with my mechanic this morning and it was definitely an original 997 water pump installed on my M96 3.6L engine (gasket hadn't been snipped and markings on the pump and engine housing matched too well to be a replacement). So there you have it.
