breather in fuel door cavity

In the front of the fuel filler is this vent or breather. What is it, what does it do? Yesterday I started hearing a harmonic noise and this was the source. The sound was intermittent like a pump turning on for ~ 10 seconds then off for 20-30 seconds. I covered it with my finger, it felt like suction. The sound would stop when covered.

Noticed a Porsche part # after posting. It led me to the carbon canister. Is that for the passenger cabin air or what? My main concern is what is causing the noise.

It is part of the fuel system EVAP vapor control system. Leave it alone and do not annoy it.

Chances are that your *purge valve in the engine compartment is malfunctioning, lives above/behind the alternator. There is also another suspect valve that lives on your filler neck behind the fender liner. Pelican has a tech article on replacing that one.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-996-997-Carrera/106-FUEL-Replacing_Your_Fuel_Line_Vent_Valve/106-FUEL-Replacing_Your_Fuel_Line_Vent_Valve.htm

When one or the other has a hard failure you will get a CEL. Most likely a P 0440 to p0455.
