brake induced wheel wobble
I need some help diagnosing a problem.
When I lightly initiate braking at 60 mph or so, the steering wheel wobbles pretty excitedly. As I apply a little more pressure on the brake pedal, the wobbling goes away completely. Additionally, it doesn't do it every time, probably only every other time. When crusing down the road at any speed, there is no wobble, no indication of unbalance, only when braking. Any ideas?

One or both brake rotors might be warped. If you have the tooll to check the run-out (I think its called), there is some spec it should be within. I just looked in the bentley, but did not see what the spec is. See if they look worn, heat, cracks etc. Rotors are pretty cheap on these cars, so it is a good place to start if they look worn.

I had the same problem with my 92 325i changed the front rotors and it went away. So I would start there, rotors are pretty cheap any way

before you go out and buy new rotors, this type of steering wheel wobber when braking from 60mph can be caused by several things besides out of spec rotors.
the first thing would be to check the torque of your wheel lugs. overly torqued or unevenly torqued lugs can also cause steering wheel wobble when braking. then, check for run out on the rim and also on the tire (both lateral and radial runout). a damaged rim and tire can also cause the same wobble at 60mph. for example, a dented rim, causes uneven wear on the tire, which results in radial runout on the tire, and thus steering wheel wobble. anyway, good luck! |

I have the same problem with my 96 328i. It wobbles when I brake from around 25 mph an up. Would it be the brake rotor then?
Thanks

All those ideas mentioned above are pretty solid, my money goes on warped rotors, but also have the lower control arm bushings checked. Do you feel any wobble when making turns?

This sounds like either warped rotors or loose caliper mounting bolts. I'd first checdk the rotors with a dial insicator to see if there is any variation. Basically, any high or low spots would inidicate a warped rotor. But I'd also check the mounting bolts as well.

Don't forget to check the REAR rotors while you're at it. Had a similar problem on 1987 535iS and it was diagnosed as bas steering gear which was replaced under warranty; that didn't fixit, but replacing the rear rotors did!
