BMW318is turb/trans/any mods
I own a 1993 BMW 318is with a auto tranny and am wondering if they make this model with a manuel tranny. I would also appreciate any info on turbos, superchargers, or anything else available for this car. any help would be sweet.

Yes, they do make 318's with manual trannies.
A search through this BBS will show you some info on one or two supercharger setups for the 318--Wayne has the kit now, I think, but has yet to install it on his car. Someone else chimed in with more on either that setup or another one. I'm not sure about turbo kits, but a person who is sufficiently inventive (or has enough money) can build a turbo setup for just about any car... --DD

A few words...
First off, turbos. As Dave says, turbo kits can be applied to nearly every car on the road, howeverto do it the RIGHT way invloves a lot of money and a complete engine re-build including low-compression pistons. Wayne indded has a supercharger kit for his 318is, I have seen the components of the kit, and it looks like a very straight-forward bolt on. I think it is supposed to add something like 50hp to the motor. It's a very cool looking kit. The blower impellers are really trick. I'm waiting to see what the final results will be. I myself have been going over the feasibility of building a turbo motor for my 325is. I would first get a hold of a used M20 block and build it with low-compression pistons, (7.5:1 most likely) then weld together a custom exhaust for the turbo. There a few sites out there where people have done this. You may want to check out www.roadfly.com to point you in the right direction. Of course, it may be easier to just install an E36 M3 motor in there. |

Ideally, you would want to put an E36 M3 motor in there, as it will bolt right in, however you are talking major bucks and considerable mechanical skill to do it right. It would certianly cost more than going with a turbo or supercharger.

Thanks again for the reply. Is there any way you could give more info on that supercharger wayne is putting in his 318is and were I might be able to pick it up and cost ect... that would be great. I really like what you guys have done with this sight it gives alot of feed back!!!! Also I tried to install an air intake on my car and couldn't find one to fit on after the sensor and would like to put one in do you know of anyone that sells the airsensor or even a kit to put an intake on?

It's a Downing Atlanta Supercharger.

I just want it to work right. I bought a pipe and a filter and replace the whole setup but the new set up didn't have a place to put the sensor wire that reads how much air is flowing in so I would run alright when going but at stoplights when at low rpms it would want to stutter and quit. so i put the factory one back on and it worked fine.

The way i did it on mine is a little different
I dont have the little sensor you are talking about on my 325, however you could easily drill and tap a small hole into the side of the intake tube. On my car it goes cone filter to adapter plate, then to the AFM, then into the throttle body. |

automatics also have a different final drive ratio as your automatic is 4 speed!
then you need clutch, both cylinders and pedal. may be you can keep the old rad or may be not?! when it comes to turbos and stuff you might as well buy a complete drivetrain/harness/computer from a wrecked 325/328! if it sounds like lots of work then sell it and buy a car with manual tranny! want more power? that is why bmw gmbh made(makes) 325, 328, 330, M3 models! good luck! |

Thanks, The next quesion I have for you is wether they make interior trim kits for my car and if they do were can I find them. I have a cloth interior that is falling appart and want to put something like white vinal in or leather to make it look as good on the inside as it does on the outside.
