AC blows hot air?

On my 1992 318is, the AC seems to blow hot air. Hotter air than the outside normal temperature air.

I have the climate control stuff turned to the coldest, on both sides.

The compressor seems to work fine, when I turn the AC button on, I can hear the compressor 'click' on. I also checked and I can see the compressor belt spinning...

What could it be? I'd like to check the refrigerant but have no clue where the "sight glass" for it is located.

Any ideas?

Ok, I have a huge correction to make...

The AC does not seem to just blow 'hot' air.

I just took the car out at night, its 70-74 degrees outside. With the AC off and the fan blowing full, the air is a little warmer than outside air. Feels like 75-77 degrees or so blowing out of the fan.

Now, with the AC on, it's the same exact thing. You can tell there is no cooling happening, but its *not* heating up the air either.

Soo..the compressor 'clicks' on, I can see the belt spinning, the AC light is on...but the air isn't really being cooled. If I knew where the 'sight glass' was, I could do a quick check for R12 or whatever this car uses.

If it is a 92 - it uses r12. If your compressor clicks on, belt spins, and AC light is on while the air that comes out is pretty much the same as with the ac off - you need more refrigerant. I had heard many horror stories that my cousin told me about his friends have $$$$ problems with their e36 AC. Turns out I just needed some more r12 - cost me $50 to have it professionally filled. And now i'm living in the cool lane.

To verify what AC type u have, just open the hood and look to the sticker on the frame below the washer fluid. You'll see r-12 most likely (i also have a 92). Good luck

also check that the rotating wheel on the centre dashboard vent is turned towards the blue dots.... (for cold air). In the centre/red dot area it mixes in ambient/hot air to control temp to the setting on the a/c control. Mostly, it looks like your refrigerant is low. Should be R12 on a '92. Get the tech to look for leaks, or you might have to refill again soon.

I'm actually trying to figure out if any of the PO's has already converted this car to R134a instead of the stock R12. If so, that'll be a money saver..

Anyway to find out if it is already converted?

Sucks, it's still R12, what a pain...I might as well convert to R134a. :/
