M20 identifcation

Does anyone have any tips to identifying the bottom end of an M20 motor to tell if it is a 2.5l or 2.7? I have an 88 325is, the head is new and says "2.5" on it, but the other day I noticed that the VIN tag on the lower end didn't match the car, so I ran a Carfax on it, and Carfax claims it's from a wrecked 88 325. Do I have a Frankenmotor here or not...are there any other distinguishing marks on the block that would tip me off as to what motor I actually have?

Thanks,
Chris

Well, unless he's done extensive modifications, a 2.5 head will not work on a 2.7 block. I dont know of any way to check off hand, but if it's an 88 it would have had a 2.5 lower end as the 2.7's stopped in 1986.
