Exhaust Leak
Hi,
I have a 1989 325i convertible that has an exhaust leak on the flexible part of the pipe just below the exhaust manifold. The rest of the system is in good shape. As I understand it, this is all one peace, which includes the catalytic converter, which is very expensive. My question is, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it? I can replace the entire front part of the system (catalytic converter and pipes) at the cost of around 360 bucks. If this is the only way I will bite the bullet, since I can't stand that hiss. Thanks Doug

not a good repair area
The time to repair will be almost as much as the replacement.
Any leak in this area can be a fatal co2 issue. If a metal pipe is rotted through in one spot the rest are close also. Later, |

That flexible piece is very prone to cracking. If it were me, I'd see if I could weld a small bead on there to stop the crack. If that is not possible, you might try using JB Weld, you just gotta clean that area good. (Someone once told me they developed that stuff to fix bullet holes in aircraft engine blocks during WW2.) That would be a temporary fix though.
The easiest solution might just be to bite the bullet and replace the section along with the catalytic converter. Pelican sells the repalcement part for Manual trannys at $354.25, for Auto Trannies, $486.00. You will also need new gaskets as well. |
