Is there OBD?

I'm new here and new to BMW repair. I'm trying to help a friend get his 318I running right again. He says it runs some times and then dies right after startup. Then it will act like it trying to start on restart. But nothing. I haven't looked at it yet, but I asked all the basics. New plugs, new fuel filter. But I don't know if a 1985 has an on board diagnostics system, nor do I know how to access the codes. Do I need a special code reader or can I short a connector, or do I have to do voodoo over the dash board to get them if it does have OBD? Any help would be greatly appreciated. He thinks it might be the fuel pump....which one I have no idea. Thanks for the help anyone here might provide.

It does have on board diagnostics, however it is very crude and not like anything there is today, you might want to consider a code reader.

If you email me I can send you an article on how to read the codes on your car..

Hmm,

The issue sounds like the fuel system.

To verify I will provide a procedure to bypass the fuel pump controls.

It is a relay with a solid state board internal. It is the largest attached to the fuse box and all I have seen are black.

In place of a diagram I will explain the connections.

Pin 31 is the ground and the wire is Brown
Pin 1 is the RPM sensor and the wire is Black
Pin 87b is to Fuel Pumps and the wire is Violet and Red
Pin 87 is to Fuel injectors and the wire is Red and white

The others are power in
Pin 15 is hot in run or start
Pin 50 is hot in start only
Pin 30 is the main input and is hot all the time.

To bypass the relay short between pins 30 and 87.
The car should operate as normal or the issue is not the relay.

"The car should operate as normal or the issue is not the relay". What do you mean by normal....as in still acting up it's not the relay, or if it runs fine the relay is bad?
