Can't machine my rotors?
Hi all,
I'm gonna be changing my pads all around. I have the new style 99 323i, and was recently advised that the rotors can't be machined? Also told to sand down the rotor surface with a fine sandpaper? Anyone else done this? regards and thanks,

The only reason that you would not be able to machine the rotors is if they are worn thin enough that machining them ("turning") would put them at or below the wear spec.
You can try sanding them, but if they're that thin already I doubt you'll be able to take off enough metal to take out the grooves while still leaving enough that they're in spec. --DD

Thanks. I guess I'm wondering if they are turnable to begin with, generally. If the rotor is not very worn, is there a problem with turning them?
thanks,

I don't think there should be, though I have heard from others (a pal with an M3) that it doesn't do much good once you've warped them....

yeah you might as well just fork over the dough for some new rotors.
theres this place that sells OEM brembo or zimmerman rotors for $35 each fronts, $45 each rears. SHIPPED. What an insane price. I think its called Great Lakes Auto Supply.

Unless the rotors you have are cross drilled or slotted, you should be able to have the vented solid rotors turned by any decent machine shop unless, as it was mentioned, the rotors are too thin to turn. I have been told it's very difficult to turn rotors w/ any kind of holes the braking area.
My 2 cents.....
