shifting problem in E36 M3
There is supposed to be a problem in getting the correct (intended) gear in the E36 M3 when shifting at high RPMs. I have searched Pelican archives and the web using Google but can't come up with any information on the problem. Can anyone point me toward information on this? Pete

Is this an automatic or manual gearbox?

No, the unintended shift thing is that there are several people who've missed fourth coming from fifth and hit second (!) instead. Obviously that is catastrophic. The M3 gearbox doesn't have much protection from this, and it seems slightly worsened by the soft transmission mounts that allow the whole tranny to shift over slightly, making the gear selection somewhat ambiguous. The fix for this is a couple things:
1. Shift with good technique and don't 'bang' gears. You'll have a much better chance of hitting the intended gear. 2. Upgrade your transmission mounts to E21 320i mounts or one of the pricier options (BMW-M Gruppe N mounts, UUC Tranny Defenders, etc). -Paul |
