air flow meter questions

allright , i bought my 91 318is about a year ago, and after tracking down all sorts of problems, (idle air control valve, O2 sensor throttle position switch, ect...) i have discovered that the air flow meter has been tampered with. (both the spring that keeps the "door "closed" , and a small potentiometer that is hidden behind a plug have been moved). the position of the potentiometer is on the far drivers side on the side of the black plastic piece that contains all the electronics on the top of the sensor. The plug is towards the back of the piece, so if you were looking at it from the drivers side of the car , it would be in the bottom right in a top view scenario. So what does this need to be set at?? i think i can get the spring back to about where it was , but a optimal voltage or ohmage setting for the potentiometer would be so much help as i am completely lost as what to do , any help would be appreciated , i know that the potentiometer has been tampered with because the black plastic plug that covers its adjuster screw thing has been pried out with a screwdriver or something, thanks in advance guys (and girls?)

This might be of some assistance in your project with the air flow meter. I realize it is a site for 944's but the air box is essentially the same thing. Just click on the air flow meter link and read away. Good luck.
