timing chain replacement??
i had a substantial oil leak this past weekend that turned out to be the primary timing chain tensioner. tightened it (large head) up with some channel locks and all seems to be well. my question is how difficult is is to replace the timing chain? it is a 1993 325is with 190,000 miles. you can definately hear some chain slap. any and all advice would be welcome.
GREAT site by the way....VERY informative! please keep up the good work! |

I have been told by BMW that the timing chain does not need to ever be replaced. Is this true?

I've heard the same.
No replacement interval, just keep the oil filled and replace the tensioner periodically. The stretching I've heard of was on forced induction motors but I suppose over time the chain could stretch on any motor.

My opinion is that the timing chain really never needs replacement. I would simply replace the tensioner...
Wayne has an article on the site that covers how to do it... http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-Camshaft-Timing/E36-Camshaft-Timing.htm |
