the stock one.

Dont waste your time with a cold air intake unless you have headers, a chip and have done modifcations to the engine that require you to get more air in.

You will not see any results from putting a CAI on a stock 318i engine. Except a lighter wallet.

Jared,

What about a CAI on a '98 323i? Completely stock right now. Would I see any benefit, or is it again a waste?

I removed the intake flute that is part of the stock air box. This increases the opening by at about 50% and I can now hear the gutteral sound of the engine at over half throttle. I like the way it sounds and there is definately more air available to the engine.

There is a website with info on the mod but it is very simple and you should be able to DIY without instruction.

If you do an air intake, it probably shouldn't be done without adding the chip and exhaust... they all work together, and then the gains are marginal at best. I wouldn't do anything for a 318, since the gains would be so small. I chipped, CAI'd, and Ansa'd my 325 and it was a noticeable difference, but marginal. I agree with Jeron on the gutteral sound being appealing, and if you have VANOS it helps you to be a little more 'in tune' with how your engine is loaded.

Save your money and get a DASC, a much better investment.

Hi,
Everything is running well and the car is still light with the 4 banger. I think that for a 4 banger engine that you are waisting your money on performance mods unless you start out with the goal of some sort of forced induction (turbo or SC).
if your changing an intake, match it to your future blower or get a kit (like the DASC) that comes with an intake.

Here is an outside shot from a recent porsche / bmw clubs track day

Here is the original thread that i posted the pics in
BMW and Porsche club track day

Do you remember the website? I'm curious to look at what you're talking about.
