325i struts

I have a 325i manufacture date of 6/91 . The front struts for this car are much more costly than for the later cars (like ones made in 92 ) What are the difference in the struts of the 2 manufacturing dates ? Could I get a set from a later manufacture date and put them on my car after I replaced the strut insert ? The reason the struts for my car are so high is that I have to buy the whole thing , not just an insert . Once again , thanks for any insight .

If i remember right, the diameter of the shock is different.
