Mass Air Sensor Bad? How can I check...

I have a 1995 325is and it started bogging down and running really rich so I pulled the codes with the pedal trick and got back 1215. After looking up codes I came back with "Mass Air Flow Sensor Fault" so I decided to do a couple of tests to see if that was the problem. First I disconnected the harness from the 4 pin MAF and the car runs EXACTLY the same way with bogging down and super rich exhaust smell. If the MAF goes bad does the DME throw out those values and revert to some closed loop mode? I think someone told me that the DME will protect the engine by running extra rich and retarding the timimg when input from MAF is out of range or no input at all. I also heard that if the MAF values are out of range then the DME goes by the Throttle Position Sensor, is there a reliable way to diagnose this problem at home so I dont get reemed at stealer? Thanks.

I think the Bentley manual has diag for the MAF and definately the TPS. Sounds like you are pretty sure it is the MAF so maybe someone can look up the MAF test for you, sorry I dont have my Bentley with me at work. Also, you might find a the MAF test on the web.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF?

Actually I have the Bentley Manual but formatted my hard drive awhile back so I guess I need to to reinstall. Its a real pain because you have to call Bentley Publishers and they read you back this long code to reactivate manual and you can only reactivate 3 times before your SOL. Anyway I just ordered a used Mass Air Sensor off Ebay for $45.00 (Thanks Ebay) and I will plug it in in and see what goes. If it still does the same thing then I will try to sell the sensor on Ebay (Thanks Ebay). I will keep you informed as the part should arrive in a few days. I did try cleaning it with carb cleaner which I found out was not the best thing to do and cleaned the contacts on the 4 pin connector but it didnt help any. I was just curious if other problems would trigger the 1215 code other than vacuum leaks which I found none.
