Clunking and ticking noise

Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone can help me with this problem or point me out in the right direction. I'm a newbie car owner and would like to learn. I own a 93 325is and there is a clunking noise that is coming from the rear of my car whenever I drive. It doesn't matter if the road is smooth or bumpy, the clunk is always there whenever the vehicle is moving. Also, there is a ticking noise whenever I turn my steering wheel to make turns. It is especially evident when I pull out of a parking lot. These noises are driving me insane!!!!!

if you're lucky it's the upper shock mounts that make the clunking, but it can be a number of things, where does the ticking noise come from?

Im not sure where it comes from but I know it is coming from the back of my car. I was wondering if it would be a rear control arm that might be causing the noise.

The RSM (rear upper shock mount) is a VERY common wear item.

Investigate it first it is very easy to check and replace. If you want something stiffer get the RSM form the E46 M3 or you can get E36 M3 or you can get the one that came with your car.

Where does the ticking noise come from? The steering wheel?

Yeah Jeron, it is coming from the steering wheel. It doesnt sound to good. Wonder if it is my tie rod. However, I bought it to a mechanic and he said the tie rod isn't loose.

There is an airbag contact ring that makes a squeak noise when you turn the wheel. This is also VERY common.

Fixing the squeak is supposedly kind of involved and you need to be careful handling the airbag.

You should find RSH replacement on BimmerDIY also.

The noise with the steering wheel is not a squeeking sound but rather it sounds like something is about to snap. I think it is the tie rod. How much is the average cost to fix rear shock mounts if I were to take it to a mechanic?

I can't imagine it would be more than 1/2 hour labor. So $50 + parts. Maybe $100 total.

It isn't much harder than changing your oil. You have a jack in your trunk, you need a jack stand (for safety) and a ratchet set.
